18 years ago, John Cunningham, then a B2B sales representative at Bell Atlantic (now known as Verizon Wireless), saw an opportunity in the GPS tracking and telematics space. Although he doesn’t refer to himself as one, he is an entrepreneur in every sense of the word. He is a visionary who saw an opportunity to go beyond simple vehicle tracking to transform businesses and ultimately save his clients’ money. When John co-founded Vehicle Tracking Solutions (VTS) with his wife, Karen, in 2002, he did not intend to build a software company. Despite that, that’s exactly what VTS is today.
As a visionary leader and advocate of technology as a tool to boost business productivity, John transformed VTS into the most sought-after telematics provider today. When VTS was founded, there were fewer competitors in the industry, but these competitors were much larger companies who already had established products. This didn’t deter John from using his self-funded startup to take the competition head-on.
With a focus on the end user, the quality, integrity, and timeliness of device installations were prioritized. VTS’ fleet of vehicles and mobile workforce have performed and continue to perform installations of devices. VTS was able to not only build a fleet management solution for its clients, but also use the same technology to manage its own fleet. Unlike many other companies, VTS’ developers and service team work out of the same office.
VTS focuses on multi-use fleets, fleets with light duty trucks, heavy duty trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment. Traditionally, these fleets need multiple fleet management or telematics solutions in place, but VTS’ Silent Passenger allows for the management and tracking of all of these types of assets in a single platform. Silent Passenger software solution is configured to fit the specific needs of each client.
With a client-focused onboarding process, VTS can provide a unique deployment and onboarding experience to each business. For example, The Township of Woodbridge needed a solution to manage the care and maintenance of 10 separate towns populated by nearly 10,000 residents while staying within their budget. VTS collaborated with the township to create an effective fleet management strategy. Today, the Township of Woodbridge experiences unprecedented efficiency in their operations and has significant savings for their taxpayers.
Vehicle Tracking Solutions offers high touch service at competitive pricing to a growing base of clients in multiple industries across the US. VTS foresees enhancements to their safety and video telematics solution, focusing on sharing more information with the mobile workforce through gamification and dashboards via the suite of VTS mobile apps. In 2019, VTS plans to deliver a more robust preventative maintenance solution integrating the existing ELD and DVIR features.
According to John, “We didn’t come this far, to only come this far, there is much more to come”. For entrepreneurs who are interested in making it in the industry, John said, “Charter a course that will take you to your goals, it will take time, but stay consistent. ”T
